Perhaps I'm jumping too quickly here

the young man is the god      

He was the god, certainly, throughout much of the history of western culture, from the Ancient Greeks and much earlier, but the worship of the female seems to have everywhere come before that.

And surely now any kind of worship is completely out of place, for the god moved from being an external to being our inmost selves in the time of Jesus Christ and since then has turned, has it not, into such unexpected forms as humanism, socialism, communism, anarchism and the worship of progress and even of science and of technology itself, all of which I see as heresies or transformations of Christianity. Not that I like religion of any kind, though of a religious temper.
